President Ernest Bai Koroma has delivered a sermon like statement at the grand opening of the newly constructed 6,500-seater Flaming Evangelical Ministry mega Church, this past Sunday, 22nd May 2016.
According to Awoko, The President said that the ministry has come a long way “to provide light where there is darkness,” adding that the ministry should continue to shine its beacon of hope to those who are still in the dark.
President Koroma spoke about the ministry’s international branches, saying he is a proud man as Sierra Leoneans are now evangelizing to the world, noting that before ‘it was foreigners coming to evangelize to us’.
While expressing admiration towards the construction of the edifice, the President emphasized the importance of “visionary leadership and commitment” further emphasizing that a visionary leader needs commitment to actualize his vision.
He also noted that the mega church is in line with his infrastructural development plans, adding “when you build infrastructure you change a nation.”
President Koroma further commended Flaming for it’s off the pulpit activities, accentuating that “beyond the pulpit you are building schools and vocational institutions and also providing jobs and pipe borne water for deserving communities.”
The President also acknowledged the role the Ministry is playing in the interreligious council to further cement and strengthen religious tolerance.
He encouraged Flaming to continue in its drive, advising them “that there should be no reversal; you must continue to move on.”
The founder and general overseer of the Church, Bishop Fredrick Abu Koroma spoke about how far they’ve come from a garage to a multi-million dollar edifice, which was funded by the worshippers. He noted it has not been an easy road but God has always been there to see them through.
The Bishop assured the President and the congregation that they are intending to build a university, adding that a piece of land has already been bought with regards this project. The Bishop noted that apart from evangelism they have embarked on charity and other activities to spread mortality.
Flaming Evangelical Ministries was founded in 1987 in response to a burning desire from the Lord to win lost souls for Christ. It is an indigenous Christian body that is committed to the propagation of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the barren areas of Sierra Leone.
It is an independent and self-supporting multi-faceted Ministry. It started its first Church service in a small classroom at the Prince of Wales Secondary School, Kingtom, through the able assistance of the then Principal of the School, Mr. Horatio Nelson-Williams.
This started expanding and on the 31st December 1996 the church transferred to Ascension Town Road, where it initially hosted 1,700 persons per service. The Church was officially opened by President Koroma and wife, Sia Koroma, while the edifice was consecrated by Bishop Akintayo Sam-Jolly.
